Jack Harden is your average good-old-fashioned American truck driver. You can ask the girl he's got duct-taped in the back of his cab, she'll tell you. Oh, don't worry - it's okay. His wife knows all about it. She told him to do it.
Taken (Audible Audio Edition) Adam Light Commodore James Books
Adam Light's Taken is a throwback to the Alfred Hitchcock Presents style of short story suspense: a quick read that builds on a bizarre premise to an enjoyable twist ending. In less than 30 pages, Light manages to turn the reader's expectations around a couple of different times, leading to an ending that is far from what the reader originally envisioned.Jack Harden, a long haul truck driver, returns home from dropping off his latest load with an unwilling new passenger, the waitress from a truck stop who has been kidnapped by Jack. The waitress is actually a gift for Jack's wife, Dianne, a dominating woman Jack calls his Goddess. Dianne is upset that Jack may have tried to cheat at her on an earlier run and demands he show his loyalty by bringing home a trophy.
The actual kidnapping goes fairly smoothly even though Jack doesn't have much experience at this sort of thing. However, once Jack manages to brings the waitress home to Dianne, the pace picks up and the story gets much more interesting. It's hard to say much more without giving away one or more of the plot turns, but suffice it to say, the relationship between Jack and his wife causes this story to take an even more bizarre turn.
Adam Light's writing style is fairly low key, which serves this story well. The story is told from Jack's point of view, but Light avoids turning him into an over-the-top unhinged lunatic, just a guy trying to make his wife happy. Once Jack has kidnapped the waitress, the story moves fairly quickly to the final confrontation when Jack gets her back home. Light does manage to thrown in a few clever descriptive phrases along the way, although the dialogue between Jack and the waitress is clunky in a couple of spots.
A short while ago, I had the opportunity to read a story by Evans Light, the brother of Adam Light. Apparently the two brothers work closely on their stories, each serving as the other's editor. Now that I've had a chance to read one of Adam's stories as well, I can safely say that these two writers definitely have the "Light touch" for writing the short suspense story.

Taken (Audible Audio Edition) Adam Light Commodore James Books Reviews
This was a great short story! It was a great set up and captured my attention right from the start. I enjoyed it immensely.
As you read you begin to understand Jack and what he will do for his Goddess, his wife. Undying love? Fear? Or just plain psycho? Never expected that twist at the end. Great job to the Author!
Well I thought the wife would be dead or a zombie , but that was not the case. It's a pretty good little short story and because it's short, you don't really get into the characters very much. I would like to have just a little more background on the players, but hey you can't have everything eh? I love the Light brothers' other stories as well. Keep up the good work.
Good book that had me thinking about the classic "Psycho", but I don't want to give it away by saying too much. Author has a way with words including this passage from the book "Even seeing her perform the menial task of re-stuffing the napkin holders was intoxicating". Adam Light is fast becoming my go-to author when I need a little scare to "frighten" my day. Good book!
Jack is a truck driver and wants to please his wife, 'goddess', Diane.
Jack pulls into a diner and makes small talk with a waitress and then kidnaps her. But what's particularly gripping is wondering whether Jack has the upper hand during his drive back home.
Overall, this is a suspenseful tale with a satisfying ending. I highly recommend it.
I'm not sure what's in the DNA of Adam and Evan Light, but they wrote some really great short stories!
Adam has written another tale that you have to finish once you start. From page one I was hooked on Taken. I was pretty sure I knew where the story was headed but once I got to the end, even I was surprised.
If you haven't read an Adam Light story, what are you waiting for? Give this one a read!
Adam Light brings some twists and turns to this short story that I wasn't expecting.
Jack, long haul trucker, has a special load this time - a surprise for his "Goddess" Dianne. Rayne, truck stop waitress, gets more than she bargains for when she asks for a light to her cigarette from Jack.
There's surprises for everyone in this little gem from author Light.
Good pacing and a glimpse into Jack's warped world - what more could a reader expect from a horrific little tale?
Possible spoiler alert I probably would not have downloaded the book if it were not for the fact that the description makes clear that it is the "victim" comes out on top.
TAKEN is a very quick read. While we are led to believe that the protagonist is our poor slob of a truck driver who really means no harm to anyone, it doesn't take long to realize that the true protagonist is the waitress tied up in the sleeper of the truck. The author adequately invests us into both main characters and in the space of 20 or 30 pages brings us from unlikely kidnapping to permanent resolution. The ending is not entirely unpredictable but it was an enjoyable read -- especially for the free price of admission -- and won't cause any nightmares of discomfort.
